We’re Creating A Better New Jersey For All Ages

The age-friendly movement was launched by the World Health Organization in 2005, with the goal of developing local strategies to respond to the global challenges and opportunities of our aging population. The movement took hold in New Jersey more than a decade ago and gained momentum in 2016, following a grantmaking initiative of Grotta Fund for Older Adults and The Henry & Marilyn Taub Foundation, which seeded new community-led projects and formed this regional alliance. In 2021, Gov. Murphy formally expanded these efforts through an Executive Order, and New Jersey became a state member of the AARP Age-Friendly Network, which as of January 2025, also included five of New Jersey’s counties and 22 of its communities.

Aging As We Know It Is Changing

The mission? Across the globe – and here in the United States and in New Jersey – we are approaching a day when the young will no longer dramatically outnumber the old.

New Jersey must prepare to meet the needs of our future seniors, and in doing so, we can make the Garden State a more welcoming and supportive environment for everyone. Our community, government, business and civic leaders need to recognize that population aging comes with challenges but also opportunities – opportunities to create healthier and more resilient and inclusive communities, along with social and economic systems that work better for everyone.

We need to reimagine our communities as places to live, work and play across our lifespans.

That’s where YOU come in.

The Age-Friendly New Jersey Alliance brings together communities, governments, and the brightest minds in age-friendly policy to build better communities that work for all New Jerseyans.
